Paris, the City of Love, has long been a beacon for tourists seeking to immerse themselves in its rich history and culture. However, the surge in tourism numbers, particularly in areas like Montmartre and the Marais, has led to overtourism, leaving residents complaining of packed streets and a loss of local charm. To combat this, Intrepid Travel has introduced Uncommon Day Trips, an innovative concept designed to spread tourists out around the city and away from the most crowded areas.
I recently had the opportunity to experience this new tour, led by Intrepid tour leaders Cecilia Garcia Riglos and Benoit Collas. Starting at the Musée de l’Homme on the Trocadéro esplanade, we ventured to the quieter 16th Arrondissement, exploring Passy, a once-peaceful village on the outskirts of the city. This area, known for its wealthy residents and aristocratic legacy, offered a glimpse into a different side of Paris.
One of the highlights of the tour was the Passy Cemetery, where we encountered elaborate tombs belonging to the likes of Claude Debussy and Jacques Guerlain. The guides then led us along the Rue de Passy, admiring the Art Deco architecture, before strolling through picturesque parks and along beautiful streets. The Eiffel Tower, a symbol of Paris, was ever-present, but we barely came across any other tourists, giving us a unique and intimate experience.
The tour continued to Rue Raynouard, where we visited the historic Maison de Balzac, the former home of the famous French novelist Honoré de Balzac. The peaceful garden and nearby patisseries provided a delightful respite from the city's hustle and bustle. Food played a major role in the tour, with a local market offering an abundance of fresh produce and delicious pastries.
As the tour drew to a close, we were left feeling as though we'd seen behind the veil, a brief but interesting peek at an area that is very close to the Eiffel Tower yet feels a world away. For those in search of an insight into Paris outside the well-trodden path, this is a great option. The tour provides a unique perspective on the city, allowing visitors to experience a side of Paris that only locals know about.
Uncommon day trips to Paris cost from £48 with Intrepid, and you can get to Paris with Eurostar from £39 each way. This is a must-do for anyone looking to explore Paris beyond the crowds and experience the city's hidden gems.
