Flashing Warning Devices to be Installed at Dangerous Intersection on Route 501 North of Lititz (2026)

Elizabeth Township is taking a proactive approach to enhance road safety on Route 501, a stretch of road notorious for its accident-prone intersection with Lexington Road, Loop Road, and Bomberger Road. The township's efforts are driven by a pressing need to address the high number of crashes that have occurred over the past several decades, despite previous safety improvements.

The intersection, located at the crest of a hill, presents a challenging scenario for drivers. Southbound and northbound traffic approaches at a posted 45-mph speed limit, with yellow caution signs indicating a 40-mph speed limit at the intersection. The primary issue lies in the fact that eastbound drivers on Lexington Road must stop before proceeding, navigating through high-speed traffic.

The township's administrator, Loren Miller, has filed an application with PennDOT to install flashing warning signals on yellow caution signs, reminding motorists of the upcoming turn and reducing the speed limit to 35 mph. This move is a significant step towards improving safety, as PennDOT will cover the cost of the devices, while the township takes on the responsibility of maintenance.

The installation of these warning devices is expected to occur later this year or early in 2027, following a bid process in September. This initiative is a testament to the township's commitment to public safety and its willingness to explore innovative solutions to address persistent road safety concerns.

Board Chair Michael Diehl expressed optimism about the project, stating, 'We need something there, and this is a step in the right direction.' The upcoming June 22 meeting will provide an opportunity for further discussion and decision-making, marking a crucial phase in the journey towards a safer Route 501.

This development highlights the importance of continuous efforts to enhance road safety, especially in areas with a history of accidents. By implementing these warning devices, Elizabeth Township is taking a proactive approach to mitigate the risks associated with this dangerous intersection, ultimately contributing to a safer and more secure driving environment for all.
